  • 1. Download and Install the Latest Version of the HaptX SDK

    1. Download the latest version of the HaptX SDK.
      1. Please note: If you have a previous version of the SDK installed, and you are downloading the files in the same place, downloading the new version will overwrite all preexisting SDK files.
    2. Install the SDK following the built in prompts. Additionally, more guidance on installation steps and what’s included can be found on the SDK Documentation Page.
    3. To test your HaptX Gloves G1 system, we highly recommend using the Starter Projects. These were selected by default as part of the SDK installer.
      1. Additionally, you can download the HaptX Demo Vignettes to access HaptX VR developer created content to test your gloves in VR.

    2. Open the HaptX Dashboard

The installer will have created a shortcut for the HaptX Dashboard on your desktop. Double click this icon to open the HaptX Dashboard. The Dashboard allows you to view the debug log, simulate and view the status of hardware, connect to Wi-Fi, pair your trackers, and is the place to access any settings or configurations for your HaptX Hardware.

    3. Open the boxes and Choose your Configuration

You will have received several boxes containing an Airpack and its cables, one or more pairs of Gloves and a Mobile Accessory Kit (if ordered).

Please note: The HaptX Gloves G1 Kit does not come with VR Trackers or VR Headsets. You will need to purchase these separately. For suggestions on what trackers and headsets to invest in, please consult our spec sheet, or reach out to HaptX Support.

    4. Stationary or Room-Scale Configuration for VR

The HaptX Gloves G1 can be used in a stationary configuration for seated and standing-only VR experiences, or in mobile configuration for room-scale VR experiences using the Backpack Attachment. Before starting the session, decide which configuration will be best.

The HaptX SDK supports headsets that use SteamVR™ but others may be compatible. Follow the set-up instructions provided by the headset manufacturer to set up the space in stationary or room scale modes. When using the HaptX Gloves G1 for standing-only stationary use, it is recommended to use an adjustable table to optimize the height of the table for the height of the user.

Please note: Do not use or store the HaptX Gloves G1 system outdoors.

  • Hardware Set Up
  • 1. Place the Airpack in a good location

The Airpack supplies pressurized air and regulates the pressurized air supplied to the HaptX Gloves G1. To prevent overheating, do not obstruct any of the vents or place the Airpack in a confined space with limited air circulation. Make sure the Airpack is resting feet side down on a sturdy level surface.

Please note: the Airpack comes with two red rubber covers for the tether connectors. Make sure to have these covering the tether connectors anytime the Gloves are not attached to the Airpack to prevent debris from entering the system, especially during POST.

    2. Connect the Airpack to a power source

    image.png

    Plugging Into Power

The HaptX Airpack will need to connect to a power source to operate. To connect, plug the power supply into a wall outlet, and plug the other end into the base of the Airpack. The power supply has a locking connection so you will need to pull back on the sheath of the connector as you insert it into the Airpack.

NOTE: For customers outside of the USA, a separate IEC cable has been included with each power supply shipped. Make sure to use the correct IEC cable for your country when plugging into a power source. Please alert HaptX Support if an alternative cable is needed.

    Optional: Battery Power

The HaptX Gloves G1 system can also operate on battery power. Before installing a battery, ensure the Airpack is off and disconnected from wall power.

    1. To start, insert the battery into the top of the Airpack. Make sure the battery is fully seated, and you hear it click into place.
    2. After finishing use of the Airpack OR if using the Airpack with wall power, make sure to remove the battery and place it in a clean, dry, location out of direct sunlight, or place it in the charging dock to allow it to fully charge.

    3. Attach Gloves to Airpack

If you have powered on the Airpack at this point of the setup, wait for the Airpack to finish POST (Power on Self Test) before removing the red caps to attach gloves. You’ll know this is complete when the LEDs are no longer blue and cycling back and forth, and the system status LED is flashing white (or a steady blue, if connected to a computer). If you have not powered it on, you can power it on now with red caps attached or wait until gloves are attached.

    1. Select the appropriately sized Glove using the HaptX hand sizing guidelines. If the hand is between sizes, please size up. Click here for the HaptX hand sizing guidelines.
    2. Find the left and right sides of the Airpack, to ensure you connect the gloves to the correct side. The left and right side of the Airpack are labeled with an L and an R by the USB-C connector.
    3. The left- and right-hand gloves are labeled on the tag on the inside of the cuff.
    4. If switching glove sizes make sure that the gasket (clear silicone) is still installed in the Airpack before attaching a glove.
    5. Line up the tether connector with the Airpack connector using the alignment features on the connector and push gently to align. Note that the side of the Airpack is at an angle so your alignment of the connector will also be at an angle.

    1. Twist the nut to the left two full rotations to allow the threads to line up.
    2. Once the threads and the alignment features are lined up, twist the nut as far as possible by hand to tighten the connection.
    3. Attach the USB C cable from the tether to the Airpack.
    4. Follow these instructions for both glove sides.

    1. Place the Airpack on a flat surface with the rubber feet facing down.
    2. Place the Backpack Accessory on top of the Airpack, lining up all four of the Fidlocks™ and holding the straps above the backplate.
    3. Once the Fidlock™ magnets snap into place, make sure that the knobs on the top two Fidlocks™ are twisted all the way clockwise to lock them into place.
    4. Ensure the Fidlocks™ are secure by gently lifting on the backpack accessory.
    5. Note: Battery power should be used whenever the Airpack is worn on the body to minimize tripping hazards.

    5. Power on the Airpack

On the bottom of the Airpack, toggle the power switch on.

    1. The system will go through a POST (Power on Self Test). This process can take between 60 and 120 seconds. If all four lights are no longer flashing in a wave pattern, POST is complete. If the lights have stopped pulsing and a red LED light has appeared, POST has failed, and you should contact HaptX Support.
    2. The system is working as normal even if very little sound comes from the compressor and fans. However, when VR content is started, the Airpack will emit the light sound of the system running.

    6. VR Headset & Trackers Set Up

The HaptX Gloves G1 system can be operated with a variety of Virtual Reality Headsets and Trackers. To set these up to work with the HaptX Gloves G1 system, please visit the preferred Headset and Trackers manufacturer’s website for instructions on how to set them up.

If you are using a Steam VR compatible set up, you will need to:

    1. Pair and set up the headset and trackers following the instructions from Steam VR
    2. Pair the trackers with the gloves in the dashboard.
      1. For further instructions on this process, please read "Pairing Trackers to HaptX Dashboard".

    7. Optional: Wi-Fi Set Up (Mobile Configuration)

If using the HaptX Gloves G1 system in Mobile configuration, the Airpack will need to be connected to Wi-Fi.

    1. In order to start the Wi-Fi setup, you will need to have the Airpack turned on, have it go through the POST process.
    2. Open the HaptX Dashboard. Navigate to the Setup Wizard.
    3. Go to Device, then Wireless Setup.
    4. Alternatively, select View, then Settings.
    5. Click Next on the Setup Wizard introduction page.
    6. The Network Setup page utilizes existing Wi-Fi infrastructure (router, etc.). Enter the SSID and password for the router.
    7. Choose to use DHCP to automatically assign an IP address to the Airpack, or specifically a static IP.
      1. If using DHCP, it is recommended to configure your network to reserve an IP for the Airpack to avoid having to update the IP in the settings whenever it changes.
      2. When finished, click Next.
    8. On the Transmit Settings page, please connect the Airpack to the computer via USB. Once completed, click Next.
      1. The Connection page will run through the steps to update the Airpack with the new settings. It will then reboot and wait for it to connect.
      2. It will detect the assigned IP and use that to populate the “IP Address” box in the Settings dialog box.
    9. Once it connects, click Finish.

    Note for IT Administration:

    • The HaptX Airpack listens for TCP connections on socket 31337. This port must be allowed though any established firewall.
    • The HaptX Airpack listens for (and responds to) ICMP Echo requests (i.e., “pings”). ICMP traffic must be allowed through any established firewall.
    • The HaptX Airpack does not initiate outbound connections.

    8. Optional: Donn the Backpack (Mobile Configuration)

    1. Attach the gloves to the Airpack by looping the orange loop on the palm side of the glove through the carabiner on the backpack.
    2. Make sure to adjust the backpack accessory using the straps on the top of the shoulders and under the arms to ensure the most comfortable fit.
      1. Note: Adjusting the straps at the top of the shoulders may require taking the backpack off.
    3. The chest and waist straps should be used, as they ensure ergonomic fit and minimize vibration from the Airpack.
    4. Handle the Airpack with care while in the Mobile configuration. Gently set the system down when doffing the backpack, and make sure that that Airpack is always set down directly on the feet, never resting on the bottom or sides.

Note: Resting the Airpack on the connectors may damage the connectors over time.

    9. How to Don a HaptX Glove

Important Note: HaptX Gloves are a precisely engineered piece of technology, complete with pneumatic tubes, electronics, cables, and moving mechanical assemblies running behind the fingers and between the two plastic casings. Take care when donning and wearing the gloves that you do not drop the gloves, hit them on hard objects, tug on cables, or apply force to the fabrics of the gloves with your fingers before your fingertips are seated in the thimbles to prevent damage from occurring to the gloves.

    1. Don a hygiene glove, then guide your fingers into the HaptX Glove, palm face up with your fingers only slightly spread, and your thumb in a relaxed position in line with your index finger.
    2. Pull on the HaptX Glove using the pull tabs on the wrist.
    3. If the thumb or pinky are pointed out to the side and causing resistance, gently move them into a straight position.
    4. Check to make sure the glove feels fully seated, that the sleeve on the forearm is pulled as far down as possible, and that the fingertips reach the tip of the glove. Gently press down on the tip of the fingers to ensure they are well seated against the fingertips.
    5. Tighten the back of hand dial lacer by turning to the right until it is snug on the hand.
    6. Tighten the wrist dial lacer until it is snug.
    7. If either lacer is too tight turn counterclockwise until you hear a click to release the lacer, and use the orange pull tab to loosen the laces before retightening.
    8. Repeat steps for the next glove.

    10. Launch Content

As part of your set-up process, we encourage you to try your new HaptX Gloves G1 in our demo content and/or the starter project to ensure system is working as expected prior to testing the system with content that you have created.

    1. The SDK download includes Unreal and Unity plugins and starter projects that can be used to start developing from, or as a test of the system.
    2. Locate the file and launch the project.
    3. Additionally, you can download our demo content here to test.

    11. How to Doff the HaptX Glove

    1. Ensure that any application that has been started is closed before doffing the gloves, to ensure that accidental damage does not occur from doffing the gloves while an actuator is engaged.
    2. Release both lacers by twisting them counterclockwise. The lacers are released once a clicking sound is heard.
    3. Pull on the orange tabs to loosen the laces.
    4. With one hand on back of hand casing, and the palm of the glove on your chest, pull your hand out of the glove.
    5. Warning: Do not pull on the fingertips to doff your HaptX glove.

    12. Shutdown Process

When the user is done using the HaptX Gloves G1 system or if they are looking to move the system to a new location, they should follow these steps to properly shut down the system:

    1. Ensure the gloves are placed in a safe location, free from risk of accidental drops, or items being set on top of them.
      1. If disconnected from the Airpack, keep the red caps on the tether connector to protect air lines from debris.
    2. On the bottom of the Airpack, toggle the power switch off.
      1. If disconnected from gloves, keep the red caps on the tether connector to protect air lines from debris.
    3. When packing the system to be moved, disconnect everything and pack in the supplied box. If you are going to be traveling with the system, please obtain a hard sided case. Contact HaptX support for recommendations.
